Indiana Finishes 2019 with Nearly Half a Billion in Sports Wagers

Indiana finished 2019 with nearly half a billion in total sports wagers on the back of its strongest month yet. According to figures released by the Indiana Gaming Commission last week, Hoosiers placed a grand total of $161,808,925 in sports wagers in December.

Altogether, Indiana sportsbooks logged $435,998,649 in wagers throughout 2019. The state’s first retail sportsbooks launched in September and were followed by the first mobile sportsbooks in October.

Mobile Betting Posts Another Solid Gain

Indiana’s mobile betting operators posted another solid gain in December, collecting more than $110 million in wagers. That was good for another 15% increase in mobile betting handle. November saw mobile betting gains of 100%, but that was also the first full month of mobile betting for DraftKings, BetRivers and FanDuel.

December saw the launch of BetAmerica, Indiana’s fourth mobile sportsbook. BetAmerica’s paltry handle of just north of $2,000 came as a result of fewer than two whole days of action having launched on December 30th.

FanDuel saw the biggest gain in December with total betting handle rising by more than 50%. DraftKings saw a more modest gain of 4% while BetRivers slipped by about 6%.

Mobile Sportsbook November Handle December Handle % Change
DraftKings $64,084,130 $66,701,840 4%
FanDuel $23,727,830 $35,962,198 52%
BetRivers $8,393,415 $7,908,510 -6%
BetAmerica N/A $2,129 N/A
Total $96,205,375 $110,574,677 15%

Mobile betting as a percentage of total handle crept up again in December to account for roughly 68% of total betting handle. In November, mobile betting accounted for 65% of wagers placed in Indiana.

There is still plenty of room for growth in mobile betting handle if Indiana follows the trend set by New Jersey, where mobile betting accounts for upwards of 85% of total handle. The launch of BetAmerica at the end of 2019 along with additional operators expected to come online in 2020 will provide Indiana bettors with more options and should help propel the state’s online betting industry.

Retail Sportsbooks Holding Steady

Retail sports betting handle held steady in December, posting a gain of less than 1% over November’s results. Rising Star Casino, Indiana Grand and French Lick saw the largest percentage increases while Harrah’s Hoosier Park and Winner’s Circle Indianapolis posted double-digit decreases month over month.
